Bart's Guide to Online Roulette

Roulette is a table game based on sheer luck. This is good news because, as such, it doesn't require learning complex strategies. However, you should be familiar with its rules and understand the gameplay. Hence, I've created a comprehensive guide to online roulette, covering all its intricacies.

Keep reading to learn more about betting options, payouts and the most popular roulette variants available at online casinos in Australia.

Online Roulette Rules and Gameplay

Like roulette at land-based casinos, the online version of the game is all about placing bets to predict the outcome of each round. Now, there's a catch. There are so many bets that one can go wrong with and lose their hard-earned cash.

So, to play roulette successfully, you must first understand how the bets work. Before I give you my step-by-step guide to online roulette, let's examine all the betting options you can choose from.

Roulette Inside Bets

First, we have inside bets. Their name comes from their position on the betting layout. Since you predict that the ball will land on a specific number, these betting options involve more risk and award higher payouts. Here is a lowdown on inside bets in Roulette.

  • Straight Up: A bet on a single number and the riskiest betting option. It pays 35:1 in most games.

  • Split: A bet on two numbers that is also a risky betting option. It pays 17:1.

  • Street: A bet on three numbers that pays 11:1.

  • Corner: A bet on four numbers with a payout of 8:1.

  • First Four or Basket: The former applies to European Roulette, where you can bet on the 0/1/2/3 sequence to win 8:1. The Basket bet is available in American Roulette, where you can wager on 0/00/1/2/3 for a chance to win 6:1.

  • Six Line: You place a bet on two adjacent lines or six numbers in total. The Six Line bet pays 5:1.

Roulette Outside Bets

As their name suggests, outside bets are placed on the outer side of the betting layout. They are less risky than inside bets, resulting in lower payouts.

  • Dozen: Place this bet to cover a group of 12 numbers (1-12, 13-24, or 25-36). The bet pays 2:1.

  • Column: Like Dozen bets, Column wagers cover 12 numbers. Yet, this time, these numbers constitute columns on the betting layout. If any number in the selected column wins, you win 2:1.

  • Low/High: With this bet, you predict that a number from 1 to 18 or 19 to 36 will win. It pays 1:1.

  • Red/Black: This is another even-money bet. If a red or black number wins, you get paid 1:1.

  • Odd/Even: Just like its name says, you predict that an odd or even number will win with this bet. Again, a payout is 1:1.

Roulette Neighbours and Section Bets

Besides the main bets listed above, online roulette offers so-called neighbour or call bets. They include a specific single number and two numbers on either side of it. So, practically, you cover five numbers with five Straight Up bets. To play these bets, you must use the racetrack, which functions as an additional betting layout.

At the same time, the racetrack can be used to place so-called section bets. Here are the options you can choose from:

  • Tiers Du Cylindre: It's French for a third of the wheel and covers 12 numbers between 27 and 33 with six Split bets. It pays 17:1.

  • Les Voisins Du Zero: Meaning zero's neighbours, the bet covers 17 numbers between 22 and 25. It combines a Split, Street and Corner bet and pays 17:1 or 8:1, depending on the winning number.

  • Les Orphelins: The Orphans bet covers the eight numbers not included in the previous two section bets. You place four Split bets and one Straight Up bet in total. If you get lucky, you can win 17:1 or 35:1.

  • Jeu Zero: It translates to zero game and covers six numbers between 12 and 15, including zero, two of its neighbours on one side and four neighbours on the other. Consisting of three Split bets and a Straight Up bet on 26, the Jeu Zero bet can pay 17:1 or 35:1.

How to Play Online Roulette

Now that you are familiar with all the betting options, we can get in on the action. Here is what you should do to play roulette online:

  1. Choose a trusted Aussie casino from my list: Once you pick the casino site, register, deposit, and claim the welcome bonus.

  2. Go to the lobby and pick a roulette variant you like: You can choose from RNG and live dealer roulette games. More on choosing the right match for you a bit later.

  3. Load the game and place your bet: You can select from chips of different values and place one or more bets simultaneously.

  4. Wait for the winning number: Whether you play RNG or live roulette, the ball spins around the wheel and lands in a pocket to determine the outcome of the round.

  5. Cash out your winnings: When you have enough money in your bankroll to request a withdrawal, do it.

Roulette House Edge

Online roulette comes in three main variants: European, American and French. The most common variant you can play at Aussie casinos is European Roulette. To understand the key differences between the three, you should get familiar with their house edges.

  • European Roulette: This roulette version has a single zero, which results in a house edge of 2.7%.

  • American Roulette: Due to two zero pockets, 0 and 00, American Roulette has a house edge of 5.26%.

  • French Roulette: While it doesn't differ much from the European version of the game, French Roulette has an even lower house edge of 1.35%. This is due to the Le Partage rule, which states that you win only half of your even-money bet if the ball lands on zero. It also uses the En Prison rule, preserving your losing even-money bet for the next spin. If you win on that spin, you get your stake back.

It is not difficult to tell which roulette versions are the best option for you. You should avoid playing American Roulette at all costs because of its high house margin. The good news is that European Roulette serves as the basis for innovative takes on the game, like the ones available at Evolution casinos.

Roulette Variants at Aussie Online Casinos

I've played many roulette games at the best online casinos in Australia. A few titles really stand out, and below, you can learn why.

French Roulette – NetEnt

One of the most common RNG variants at Aussie casinos is French Roulette by NetEnt. La Partage and En Prison apply when the ball lands on zero, and you've placed an even-money bet. A smooth soundtrack and high-quality visuals make playing French Roulette by NetEnt enjoyable.

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette – Evolution

After Lightning Roulette earned several industry awards, Evolution came up with the amped-up version of the game. While Lucky Numbers in the original game award multipliers of up to 500x, the updated version has multipliers of up to 2,000x thanks to so-called Double Strikes. Bear in mind that payouts on Straight-Up bets are decreased in both games, to 29:1 in the original game and 19:1 in XXXtreme Lightning Roulette.

Double Ball Roulette – Evolution

Evolution was the first to introduce a live roulette variant played with two balls. Double Ball Roulette can have two winning numbers per round and pay prizes of up to 1,300:1. This payout is granted if both balls land on the number you've placed a Straight-Up bet on. If both balls land on any number, the payout is 35:1, while a 17:1 payout is awarded if one ball lands on the number covered by a Straight-Up bet.

Mega Roulette – Pragmatic Play Live

The Pragmatic Play take on live roulette with multipliers is similar to Lightning Roulette. Mega Roulette also offers up to 500x multipliers on Straight-Up bet wins. In contrast, this bet pays 29:1 without multipliers. Also, remember that your original wager will be retained if you get lucky to win one of the multipliers.

PowerUP Roulette – Pragmatic Play Live

Just like Mega Roulette, PowerUP Roulette offers multipliers. However, in this Pragmatic Play game, they can go up to 8,000x. To benefit from multipliers, you must enter the PowerUP round. Again, only Straight-Up bets qualify you for multipliers. This bet pays 24:1 in the base game.

Online Roulette Strategy & Tips

On the internet, you can find many articles telling you how to win at online roulette. Most of them advertise betting systems, which many characterise as snake oil. After all, they suggest ways to place your bets and may work only with even-money wagers.

The truth is that there is no strategy to beat the roulette wheel, as the outcome of each round depends solely on luck. So, instead of selling you winning roulette strategies, I will share a few tips you can apply whenever you play the game.

  • Always sign up with a reputable Aussie roulette casino.

  • Choose European Roulette over the American version of the game.

  • Get familiar with betting options to understand how they work and pay.

  • Manage your bankroll by setting win and loss limits.

  • Take advantage of bonuses and promotions designed with roulette players in mind.

  • Play even-money bets as a low-risk strategy.

  • Don't chase losses, and know when to call it quits.

Bart's Take on Online Roulette and Why You Should Play It

Online roulette has many advantages, including the variety of options and being accessible 24/7 wherever you are. The latter may also be its biggest disadvantage if you can't control your urge to gamble.

Like most gambling games, online roulette is all about moderation. Try your luck at it from the comfort of your home or on the go by registering with one of the Aussie casino sites I've selected. Start with smaller bets and play responsibly to fully enjoy the beauty of online roulette at RNG or live dealer tables.
